Accounting

Accountants are usually employed in one of three major areas of accounting: public accounting, private accounting, or not-for-profit accounting. An accountant engaged in public accounting usually works for a CPA firm and services different clients, much like an attorney works for a law firm and services different clients. A private accountant is employed by an individual business and works exclusively for that organization. The last major segment of the profession is composed of those accountants employed by governmental agencies at the local, state, and federal levels and other not-for-profit organizations, including foundations, hospitals, unions, educational organizations, and charities. The Certificate in Accounting is designed to prepare individuals who have a bachelor's degree in another field for entry into the accounting profession. This program satisfies the Kentucky requirement that individuals taking the CPA Exam have a bachelor's degree in accounting or the equivalent. For more information, see the EKU Department of Accounting, Finance, and Information Systems Home Page.
